DeNovaMed Wins I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition

Congratulations to DeNovaMed Inc.!  The five-year-old drug discovery company was recently named the overall winner of Innovacorp’s  I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition.

Founded by Dr. Donald Weaver, Dr. Chris McMaster and Dr. David Byers (shown above with COO Chris Barden), DeNovaMed was recognized for its work with anti-bacterial drugs . The company has developed compounds to treat infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria known as ‘superbugs’. DeNovaMed’s anti-bacterials work by a different mechanism than other, increasingly ineffective anti-biotics. The company is currently testing these compounds and hopes to be ready for Phase 1 clinical trials within 18 months.

The I-3 competition highlights young and innovative technology companies in Nova Scotia. DeNovaMed made it through the early rounds of the competition to win one of five provincial zones and $100,000 in cash and in-kind services. The company then beat out four other zone winners to become the overall provincial winner which means it will receive a $100,000 investment from Innovacorp.
