The Location

This position is located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, which is part of the metropolitan “Halifax” urban core.  Halifax is the largest population centre in Atlantic Canada and largest in Canada east of Quebec City.  The city is always bustling with activities, ranging from entertainment on the boardwalk, sports events, gallery visits, restaurants and cafés, to everything in between.  It has all the amenities of a big city, but with a small town feel.  Halifax was recently ranked by MoneySense magazine as the fourth best place to live in Canada for 2012, placed first on a list of “large cities by quality of life” and placed second in a list of “large cities of the future”, both conducted by fDi Magazine for North and South American cities.

The Challenge

Reporting to the Americas Regional Quality Assurance Manager, is responsible for interfacing with the manufacturing sites of DSM Nutritional Products Operations Americas, as well as other functional areas, to ensure global product safety and compliance, to meet and exceed customer expectations, particularly in the area of complaints, to harmonize procedures and processes as appropriate, and to help enhance the overall regional quality program through the identification and promotion of improvement opportunities and “best practices”.

The Position

Key areas of accountability/responsibility include:

  • Provide guidance and support to the Americas Manufacturing & Technology sites
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement opportunities for the region
  • Support and manage regional projects, including standardization initiatives
  • Act as Regional Manufacturing & Technology Quality Complaint Manager by
    • Serving as regional point of contact for support & guidance, including root cause analysis and report writing
    • Liaison with Global Complaint Manager
    • Compiling and reporting regional complaint KPIs through the utilization of SAP
  • Perform regional internal audits as part of regional auditor pool
  • Carry out supplier qualification activities in support of the marine oils category, including conducting international audits as required
  • Perform audit trending of both regional and local findings, to illustrate the effectiveness of the audit programs and make apparent areas of needed focus
  • Contribute to and manage Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) implementation activities
  • Prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as required
  • Initiate and contribute to the Management of Change (MOC) process through Trackwise as required at local, regional and global levels
  •  Act as support/key user for quality related IT systems (e.g. Documentum, Trackwise)
  • Provide customer support, as required
  • Ensures Quality procedures, Management Directives and Quality improvement projects are supported and followed
  • Reports any quality deviations or non-conformances observed
  • Be aware of and follow all DSM Life Saving Rules and Customer Commitment Obligations
  • Displays and promotes positive Quality and Safety Health and Environment behaviors
  • Ensures that all safety, quality and assigned training is up to date and in compliance

The Ideal

  • Exhibits development potential, with an openness to grow within the company and be mobile
  • Bachelor of Science or technical diploma in related field
  • Minimum 5 years of QA experience in life science manufacturing industry
  • Knowledge of ISO, food, dietary supplement and pharmaceutical standards & regulations
  • Certified in HACCP principles
  • Certification as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual considered an asset
  • Trained auditor with auditing experience
  • Training and experience in Root Cause Analysis
  • Experience in the identification and implementation of quality improvement initiatives
  • Experience with SAP, Sharepoint, Trackwise, Document Management Systems
  • Strong reporting and presentation skills
  • Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing
  • Ability to work with various departments at local, regional and global levels
  • Willing to travel
