AlgaeCo is an innovative new company setting out to transform the production of food and natural health product ingredients through innovative and sustainable fermentation technologies. The company’s initial focus will be the production of algal protein as well as omega-3 DHA from our proprietary strain of heterotrophic algae.

As the Lead Fermentation Scientist you will develop fermentation and formulation strategies for microbe-based production of innovative nutraceutical and food ingredients. In this role you will apply your capabilities in discovery-based R&D, ensuring successful scale-up of new technologies, and ensuring operational excellence for the company’s commercial fermentation activities.

Primary Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning 60%
• Develop an R&D strategy aligned with the company’s commercial vision
• Carry out R&D activities in microbe-based platforms leading to new products or
• Develop and optimize fermentation SOPs
• Forecast expenditures for the fermentation activities
• Support investor and stakeholder relationships

Human Dynamics 20%
• Responsible for leading a scientific team: managing all HR requirements including
recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of new scientists, and performance managing all
• Provide leadership and coaching to scientific team members and other team
members as appropriate

Infrastructure 10%
• Provide scientific support for the planning and implementation of R&D and
Production infrastructure

Revenue 10%
• Support the Revenue team by supporting the translation of scientific processes into
understandable content for multiple audiences
• Support Revenue team as a scientific expert in key presentations

Are you the right fit for this position? Here’s what we are looking for
• MSc or PhD in Microbiology, Fermentation, or similar field
• Specialization in Chemistry, Natural Products Chemistry, or Chemical
engineering is desirable
• Capabilities include effective microbiological techniques, fermentation, microbial
physiology and identification
• Strong project management, data analysis, and record keeping
• Capable of laboratory management, protocols, and GLPs
Demonstrated success in quality control and attention to detail
• Can draft clear and effective SOPs
• At least one year experience in a scientific leadership role
• You are an innovative thinker and solution oriented
• Proactive attitude and an effective oral and written communicator
